Here’s some stuff to look forward to on the show tomorrow morning….

ON THE SHOW TOMORROW

Best Biscuits – There was a survey (from those pesky buggers in onepoll.com) which today voted the Custard Cream the tastiest biscuit of them all. This, as I’m sure we can all agree, is complete pants. There’s no disputing that they are a good emergency biscuit, but they are no toffee pop, or kimerly mikado, nor even a mint viscount. We’ll be looking for the best biccie on the show tomorrow

Punderwall – We’re starting a new pun competition on the show this week. It’s a pun competition, but we wouldn’t agree on a name for it on the show. So this morning listeners had to text in suggestions for the name. We had Punday, Bloody Punday, Ryan and Tracy’s Punderland, Puns for Mons,P-P-P-Pick up a Punguin and a whole load of others. Tomorrow we’ll pick one and kick of the competition. Pun of the week wins €100 on Friday

The Hour of Power - Is back tomorrow morning, and not contains the Spinis with The Road Rave. It’s a big banging rave tune and it’s picked by a listener who’s out and about in their car. If you spot the spinis in the morning, go up, say hi, get some freebies and request a Road Rave tune which we will play tomorrow morning just after 7.30 – Today’s Road Rave was JX – There’s Nothing I Wont Do. Sweet

Fully Charged with Ryan Phillips and Tracy Clifford is back tomorrow morning from 6.45 only on the Most Music Station, Spin1038, Dublin.

Today I got back on the horse (or, to be more accurate, and possibly to use a better cliche, bike) after a week out of the gym and without exercise. It was this day last week that I hurt by leg and developed what I have self diagnosed as Shin Splints. That still has to be resolved and there’s till huge tenderness around my shins but I decided to go back into the gym today to try and keep my physical/aerobic fitness levels up, albeit not doing any running.

I did some upper body weights, and discovered that I am still a puny little man who can’t lift squat (that’s a clever weight lifting pun in case you missed it). I always found it hard to do weights in the gym because I have always had strong muscular legs, but very weedy arms, and it’s always a bit embarassing doing weights with other guys around lift 2 or 3 times what I’m using. Anyway, today there was nobody around, so I didn’t really have to worry about it.

Then I did a 10km cycle on the bike and the 8 minute abs workout. So I was exercising for about 50 minutes. I was starting to get cabin fever from not being in the gym, but I was just being abit ridiculous because it has only been a week for gods sake. Shame my diet has gone to such absolute shit. I worked off about 400-500 calories today, which wasn’t that much anyway, but I had a creme egg (it’s the season you understand) and about 10 biscuits before I went to the gym, so it’s all a bit shambolic!!

Anyway, back in the gym and back on the bike. Woot Woot!!

Looking back on day 77 (which I can do, since I’m posting this 4 days afterwards on day 81) I could easily say that I didn’t do any training because my training guide said not to and that it was bad to run two days in a row at any time, but particularly at the start….

The reality is that despite what the training guide said, I had decided to go an do 30 minutes on the cross trainer, some weights and the whole 8 minute abs thing. Then I got in a bad mood and couldn’t face it so I ate a tin full of biscuits instead, hurrah!

With the benefit of hindsight (20×20 vision as it is) I am glad that my bad mood got the better of me, because during training on day 78 my ankle was very sore, but I’ll leave that until day 78′s entry I guess…

It’s a funny thing this training. All through my life, from school to college I was what my dad sometimes calls “a last minute merchant” where every project and college work I’ve ever had was always handed in on the last day. And so with the Marathon so far away, I haven’t got that sense of urgency I work best with. I still subconsciously (and sometimes a bit consciously too) think that I can just train harder next month or whatever and still get up to pace and fitness in time. It’s as much a psychological thing as anything else this running and marathon training. And I’m rubbish at these psychological games, which is awful news!

I could really just say “see day 72″ for this one, and add on 6 minutes to the abs thing, that was pretty much the story of the day as far as marathon training went. I did lots of other good stuff like messed around with my studio setup and put back up my now fixed microphone back up so I could record my continuity from home. That’s great and all, but it doesn’t really count for much in terms of running 26.2 miles now does it? Arse biscuits.

One person on facebook put it very succinctly when he said “you need a kick up the bum”. He offered to give me the said kick in the shape of some one hour killer workout….it sounds a bit hard to me!!

Pass. Soo 8 minutes of abs, what a hero

If it’s possible to tell how much exercise you’ve done from the smell of your T-Shirt 8 hours after the exercise (and I believe it is) then today was a very successful, if particularlty smelly, day.

Firstly, I got through 24 Hours without having a custard cream, which I’ve you read Days 1 & 2 you’ll realise is something of an achievement. In fact, I didn’t have any biscuits at all. I know, O.M.G!!

Today’s fitness training involved having my ass handed to me on a plate by my badminton buddy Tom, who hockeyed me off the court 3-0. The mind is willing, but the body is SLOW!! It’s actually a very frustrating experience, because when I used to play badminton competitvely (granted 13 years ago!) I could totally make all the shots I’m missing now, and cover the court better and faster. A lot of the time today I just couldn’t get to the Shuttle…..oh go on then, COCK. I ran, well, more skipped, nay sashayed (I just had to look up how to spell that FYI) my litttle legs off, but I’m just a lot slower than I used to be. That was kinda depressing to be honest, and a timely reminder, like one was needed, that I’m no longer 16.

Still the basic plan for the first 2 months of operation marathon is to take in less calories, and burn more by doing more exercise. Boxes ticked for today. I have set myself a goal of losing 5lbs before Christmas, and this is a good step in the right direction.

I haven’t set a date for when I’m going to beat Tom, but his time will come!

I would and all...

As I sit here at 10.56pm typing an email instead of posting a blog entry, I can’t help but feel that this first day of Marathon training could have gone a little better. Granted, I haven’t really done a huge amount of research, and, to be fair, I’m sure whatever good stuff there is out there will suggest a slow and steady approach to training. However, I suspect “Do no exercise whatsoever and eat your own weight in custard creams biscuits” is probably not ‘step one’ in any suggested training plan.

In my defence, my training gear was in my car, and my car was with my mechanic, my knees and ankles are week and my physiotherapist friend is in Thailand and I was far too busy trying to set up the blog to blog about my training to actually do any training. So, to summarise…Day one passed by and I remain injury free and in good spirits, which I’m counting as a victory.

364 days to go and I feel like I’ve taken the first step of the 26.2 miles.

Bring it on!!

Ps – By the time this post gets up on my blog, we’ll probably be on day 5 or 6. Training for a marathon seems like a walk in the park (Bushy, not Marley) compared to learning how to work wordpress!!
