Do you consider yourself interesting?

I only ask, because I think that everyone is interesting. I think one of the reasons we watch (or watched, in my case) Big Brother is because we’re interested in how other people act, and what other people do. We like comparing them to ourselves, and thinking how we’re like or dislike like them; how we’re better or worse than them in certain aspects. I posed the question a while ago on twitter, whether people thought they would win Big Brother if they were on it, and lots of people did. They assumed, as I do, that they would be better at it. Or more interesting, or more fun or whatever it is.

It’s been playing on my mind recently, because (clearly) I have a blog, and you’re reading it, but, in truth, since I stopped training for the marathon, it doesn’t really have a purpose or direction. I update it every so often with random thoughts and ramblings but they could be (and usually are) about absolutely anything. Now, I don’t read anyone else’s blog, even though there’s millions of them out there, so why could/would/should I expect anyone to read this? Woah Woah Woah, before you go dashing off, I think you should read it, I just can’t quite put my finger on why.

I see a few problems with what I might call ‘personal’ blogs. If you’re just talking about yourself and your life, then don’t you really need to give us all the juicy stuff? The behind the scences fights, the family fallouts, the career plans, the next big ideas and all of that? But can any of us really afford to spill all the intimates of our personal and professional lives on the internet, and why would we want to?

I’m interested in radio, clearly, I work in the medium. I have a huge interest in it, and have lots to say on the topic. I think lots of it is great, I think lots of it is shit. But who am I to judge, and why would you want to ready my thoughts on it?

I’m curious as to what would make you most likely to visit this website. What should I focus on? Any one particular area, or just keep posting on whatever I like and leave it to the world to stumble across posts they might like? In truth, I find it a bit therapeutic (though perhaps overly self-indulgent) to just write down whatever comes into my head, but then I could just keep a private diary and have the same effect….

So I was on holiday last week (Ring of Kerry, since you’re wondering, there’s a blog post to come shortly!) and I decided to more or less go offline for the week and not tweet or concern myself with telling the world what I was up to at any given time. Don’t get me wrong, I was tempted, and I geniunely did miss the interaction of sharing my mad little thoughts, or amusing sights by way of twit pic, but I have a slight concern that sometimes I can be so busy tweeting that I miss the full value of what it is I’m tweeting about.

Here’s the analogy I have come up with, and I’d be interested to know what you think. Have you ever seen someone so busy trying to take a photo of something, that they end up missing the experience, and find out later that they didn’t really get the great photo, or that the photo didn’t fully capture the moment or experince? I had that feeling when I went whale watching in New Zealand (I know, how cultured, knoweldged and traveled am I, like totally!!). I spent the first half of the trip chasing around the boat with my camcorder, desperately trying to get footage of the whales tails splashing off the water as they dived. I didn’t get any particularly good footage, or, if I did, I don’t know where it is now! Then I realised that I was so busy trying to get video of it, that I wasn’t really seeing it myself as it was happening. SO, I put down the camera and just watched and took it all in. Sure, I don’t have video to remember it by, but I was there, and I saw it and I will never forget it. Good enough for me.

So, can the same be said of twitter? Is there a danger that one (you, me, whoever) gets so wrapped up in letting people know what’s happening the whole time that you’re actually missing out on what you’re tweeting about? Is it ok to tweet in the middle of a conversation in the pub about what you’re conversing about? I’ve done it, and I’ve seen others do it to… “In pub with lads, having a debate about ‘x’, Dave is totally wrong, dumbass” (note, I don’t have a friend called Dave). Where do the boundaries lie?

To be honest, I’m pretty sure I don’t cross the boundaries anyway, my tweet count even on one of my busier twitter days is pretty low. But what about other people you follow? Do you never think, “holy crap, where does that guy/girl find the time to tweet so much, they must not have anything else to do with their life?”

And yes, I appreciate the irony of spending a lot of time writing a long blog post about the relatively short amount of time people take to write a tweet, and the even more ironic twist of tweeting a link to the blog post.

I actually couldn’t believe my eyes. Now, if I was Tracy Clifford, I would have screamed at him and chased him down the street and saved the bike. But given he looked like a complete junkie and had a big shears type tool/weapon in his hands, I thought better of it and called the Gardaí instead!

Some of you may know the story of the time I called the Gardaí when AIB in Templeogue was robbed (I got through to the operator and shouted “the bank’s being robbed”, the mortification), but this time I got it exactly right and told the Garda woman what had happened and what was happening. I told her what had happened and which way the guys was going on what type of bike. The funniest part of the conversation came when she asked if I could describe the guy, to which I said “He’s got a short stubble beard, scruffy, wearing a stripy black and navy jumper, jeans and a bag on his back AND HE’S GOT A BRIGHT ORANGE CLIPPERS IN HIS LEFT HAND”. Hilarious.

I’m sure he’ll never be caught, and you might be able to pick up a nicked bike fairly cheaply if you head down the streets around Nassau street this afternoon, BUT the moral of the story is, if you’re going to cycle into town and lock your bike, make it a dirty big F**K off lock, because anything else, and this is what happens, broad daylight, middle of a busy street. So, I’m on the hunt for a speed gun to measure it when I play Brian Maher at Marlay Park tomorrow afternoon. Is there a specific type of gadget, and if so, does anybody have one? Or shall i just starting calling everyone I know that’s a Garda and see if they can get one of the traffic division and get one of their speed guns?

Here’s some inspiration (both real and fake) and I’ll get Brian to record our seves tomorrow. Prepare to be amazed.
